What Rita Specializes In

Four core areas of financial planning tailored to Portuguese households and economic realities

Long-Term Goal Setting

We don't just talk about goals—we map them out. Rita helps families define what financial security actually means to them, then builds concrete plans with realistic timelines and milestones that fit Portuguese tax frameworks.

Emergency Fund Building

Life happens. Rita's approach ensures families have actual financial breathing room before investing in long-term goals. She's worked with hundreds of households to structure funds that cover 6-12 months of expenses.

Milestone Mapping

From first home to education funding to retirement—Rita breaks down complex financial journeys into clear, achievable milestones. Each milestone gets its own strategy based on your timeline and circumstances.

Seasonal Expense Planning

Portuguese households face unique seasonal patterns—summer holidays, Christmas spending, school costs. Rita helps families prepare for these predictable expenses without derailing their main financial plan.

Getting to Know Rita

How did you get into financial planning?

Honestly, it started with frustration. After finishing my economics degree at the University of Lisbon in 2010, I went to work at a major Portuguese bank. But I kept seeing the same problem: families were getting sold products they didn't need instead of getting actual guidance. So in 2013, I made the leap to independent consulting through magivalde.org That's where I could finally do what I wanted—help people without worrying about sales targets.

What makes your approach different?

Most financial advice in Portugal feels imported from other countries. We don't have the same tax system as the US or UK, we've got different seasonal patterns, and families here face specific economic pressures. I spent years studying how Portuguese households actually spend money, how our tax system rewards certain behaviors, and what financial security looks like for Lisbon versus rural regions. That's what informs everything I do.

What do you see most families get wrong about emergency funds?

They either skip them entirely—which is scary—or they build something way too small. Six months of expenses sounds like a lot until someone loses a job or faces an unexpected medical bill. I've worked with over 2,000 families, and the ones who're genuinely stress-free are the ones with real emergency cushions. Not fancy investments, just accessible money. That's the foundation everything else builds on.

How do you help people think about long-term goals?

Goals without structure are just wishes. What I do is break them down. Instead of "retire at 65," we talk about what that actually costs, when you need to start saving, what happens if you want to retire earlier or need to work longer. Then we identify milestones—every 5-10 years, what should you have accomplished financially? It makes the big goal feel manageable because you're hitting smaller targets along the way.

Why do seasonal expenses matter so much in Portugal?

Because they're predictable. Summer holidays, Christmas bonuses and spending, back-to-school costs—these aren't surprises. But I see families every year caught off guard by them because they didn't plan ahead. When you map these expenses and set aside money throughout the year, you stop derailing your main financial plan. It's not complicated, but it's transformative once you start doing it.

Why Rita Does What She Does

Financial security shouldn't require complex jargon or expensive advisors. That's the core belief driving everything Rita does. She's spent 14 years watching families stress about money—not because they're irresponsible, but because nobody's ever shown them a clear path forward.

What she's learned is this: most people don't need perfect strategies. They need simple, actionable steps grounded in behavioral economics and practical reality. They need someone who understands that Portuguese families face different challenges than families in London or New York. They need planning that accounts for seasonal patterns, local tax systems, and actual life circumstances—not theoretical best practices.

Rita's work combines three things: deep knowledge of Portugal's financial landscape, evidence from behavioral economics about how people actually make decisions, and 14 years of real experience watching what works and what doesn't. She's not selling products. She's sharing frameworks that've helped thousands of families move from financial stress to genuine security.

"Financial security shouldn't require complex jargon or expensive advisors. It requires clear thinking, honest assessment, and a plan that actually fits your life."

— Rita Ferreira

That's why she writes, workshops, and consults. Because demystifying personal finance and making it accessible—that's the real work. The rest is just numbers.
